Going into Sunday’s game against Utah State, the Bulldogs had much to boast about.

Two days earlier, the Bulldogs had a 3-0 shutout win over a young Louisiana Tech team at Bulldog Stadium to clinch a Western Athletic Conference tournament berth, which also marked the first victory for Fresno State at home this season.

The Bulldogs had the desire to get a win over the Aggies, all in hopes to get in better position for the No. 1 spot. But a tough and physical Utah State team did not let that happen, forcing the Bulldogs to a double overtime 0-0 draw.

It was a 110-minute physical combat from the start of the game, highlighted by a combined 13 fouls from both teams. Fresno State had six while Utah State had seven.

By halftime, both Fresno State (6-8-2, 3-1-1 WAC) and Utah State (5-8-3, 2-2-0) had only taken two shots each. Then the intensity picked up in the second period, with both teams scrambling to score. The Bulldogs ended with 13 shots and the Aggies five.
“We had a lot of opportunities to score, but luck wasn’t on our side,” said freshman forward Alison Sill, who took six shots, five of which were on goal.

The Bulldogs’ best goal attempt came when Sill received a corner kick from Antonea Lugo in the goal box area, but the kick by Sill hit the left goal post.

“Sometimes it just happens. Sometimes you hit a post, hit a foot, hit the line,” head coach Steve Springthorpe said. “But I’m extremely proud of my players. They battled with a great team.”

Now the Bulldogs will prepare for the last two games of the season against San Jose and Hawaii.
