With Carl’s Jr. restaurant gone from Fresno State’s University Center, the coffee house next door serves this student’s drink needs. The building that housed Carl’s Jr. will soon be remodeled to serve students with disabilities.

The remodeling of the old Carl’s Jr. building into new offices for SSD will likely be approved within the month, a campus project manager said.

The plans were completed Sept. 29.

“It’s a very central location,” said director of SSD Carole Snee. “That space is a premium on campus.”

Services for Students with Disabilities provides academic support, such as counseling, registration assistance, academic classroom accommodations and quiet test rooms.

SSD is located in the Henry Madden Library, which is in the process of preparing for partial demolition to make way for a new library. Until the library is complete SSD will temporarily be moving to the University Center in the old Carl’s Jr. building.

“We needed to move them to a new location,” said Facilities Planning Project Manager Augustine Perez. “The Carl’s Jr. space became available.”

Despite foreseen problems with the library setup this semester, SSD students haven’t had problems getting to the office, Snee said. “I thought there might be some difficulties, but it’s actually gone quite smoothly.”

Remodeling plans include: SSD staff offices, a computer lab, testing booths and a new glass door entry between the new SSD and Inter-library Lending (Renaissance Room).

“Planning began as soon as the new library was proposed,” Snee said. “We were included from the very beginning.”

Taylor Group Architects, the same group that designed the new Science II building, is working on the remodel, Perez said.

“It’s primarily an interior remodel,” Perez said. “In the end it will look like a new space. Hopefully it will be finished on time and on budget.”

Now that the plans are complete, they must be approved.

“It’s a long process,” said Snee. “First the planning of architectural design, then approvals and then building.”

According to the remodel outline, the plans will go out to bid when they are approved by the Division of State Architecture accessibility compliance and the California State Fire Marshall.

“It is anticipated that these approvals will be obtained within two to three weeks,” Perez said.

The remodel outline shows once the plans are approved the project will be put out to bid, which will take three to four weeks. The demolition work will take approximately two months.

“We’re hoping SSD will be able to move into the remodeled space before the beginning of next semester,” Perez said.

“We probably won’t move until the break after this semester,” Snee said. “We’ve been very pleased with the collaboration of official library planning and services. They’ve been supportive in making things move as quickly and smoothly as possible.”
