Time to bring out your seasoning
and barbeque sauce and don’t forget the tri-tip, chicken and ribs.
The Fresno State Alumni Association will hold a Homecoming Tailgate and
BBQ contest Oct. 15 before the homecoming game against Utah State.
Homecoming week is dubbed “Shaking It Up.”
The contest was added to this year’s event because of a strong tailgating
turnouts at Fresno State games.
“This exciting new feature is one of the ways we are involving the
community in Homecoming at Fresno State,” co-chairperson Debbie
Poochigian said in a news release. “There are a lot of tremendous
Red Wave celebrations going on at tailgates before games and some unbelievable
recipes surrounding the stadium so we wanted to put some fun into it by
seeing just who has the most spirit and who has the best BBQ dish out
there.”
President John Welty named Poochigian and Jacquie Glasener to help improve
Homecoming.
The main reason is to get everyone involved and to build tradition.
“Many alumni, students and fans tailgate and have been for years,
so we thought we would sponsor a competition to celebrate that tradition,”
Leticia Reyna, a homecoming helper, said.
For the Best Bulldog BBQ, competitors must create one BBQ entrée
that will be judged on creativity, presentation and taste.
Six samples are required of the registered dish. They must be presented
in a disposable container between 4:30 and 5 p.m. on Bulldog Boulevard.
Only one entree and the recipe for the dish must be submitted at the time
of the presentation.
Also added is the “Most Fresno State Spirit Tailgate.”
Participants can enter one of two categories: Small Groups, of 50 persons
or less; or Large Groups with 51 or more.
Judging will take place between 5 and 6:30 p.m. Judges will look for crrativity,
amount of red and blue and Fresno State spirit.
Winners will receive a banner and plaque.
Applications are being accepted through Oct. 7 and are available at www.fresnostatenews.com
or (559) 278-2586. The fee is $10.
