Fresno State hosts San Jose State for 3 games this weekend

Staff Report / The Collegian

Fresno State didn’t know the way to win in San Jose, but the team has three more chances in this weekend’s series against San Jose State at Beiden Field.

The Bulldogs’ baseball team lost two of three to the Spartans in San Jose in an early-April series. That series knocked the Bulldogs into a Western Athletic Conference slump that brought five straight losses.

Fresno State (22-25, 8-10 WAC) has a chance to make up significant ground in the conference this weekend, starting tonight at 6:35. San Jose State (24-19-1, 11-10) is tied for second place with Hawaii.

If the fifth-place Bulldogs can pull off a three-game sweep this weekend, Fresno State could potentially move into a second-place tie with Hawaii with a trip to the islands coming next weekend.

To do that, a continuance of the recent power surge put on by Beau Mills would be helpful. Mills, a freshman, leads the WAC with 17 home runs and 47 RBIs. Fresno State’s home run leader last season was Richie Robnett (a first-round selection by the Oakland Athletics) with 13.

Mills is also second on the team with a .319 batting average. Sophomore Nick Moresi leads the squad with a .361 average and is second on the team with eight home runs and 41 RBIs.

The Bulldogs have also seen some strong pitching in recent weeks, especially from Friday starter Matt Garza. In Garza’s last home start he threw eight innings of two-hit baseball for a 3-1 win over a Nevada team that was in first place at the time.
