6-game streak snapped in loss

Frank returns as women's assistant coach

Frank returns as women's assistant coach

Former Bulldogs assistant returns to sidelines after one-year hiatus to join Adrian Wiggins' coaching staff

Staff Report / The Collegian

Brett Frank is rejoining the women’s basketball coaching staff.

Fresno State interim head coach Adrian Wiggins announced Monday that Frank is returning and will be Wiggins’ head assistant.

“Brett’s knowledge of the game combined with his familiarity, rapport and deep respect for the Fresno community immediately strengthens our women’s basketball program,” Wiggins said. “We are thrilled to have him on board.”

Frank was an assistant under former coach Stacy Johnson-Klein from 2002-04 before leaving to work toward his mater’s degree at Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Johnson-Klein was fired by the university on March 2 for several transgressions. University president John Welty said a university investigation found that Johnson-Klein had committed “improper actions that resulted in an NCAA violation” and “engaged in unprofessional conduct and created a hostile work environment.”

Wiggins served as head coach for the remainder of the season, leading the Bulldogs (20-11) to a 7-4 record in the final 11 games and a berth in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

In Frank’s first year at Fresno State, the Bulldogs were 21-13 and advanced to postseason play for the first time in 13 years. At that time, Frank also handled marketing and promotions for the program.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to return to Fresno,” Frank said in a news release. “I have a great appreciation for the university and community as a whole, and I am looking forward to continuing the success of the women’s basketball program.”

Last season’s team was the sixth in program history to win at least 20 games.
