AS presidential candidates' official platforms

Undergraduate tuition has gone up over 60 percent. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
has cut over half a billion dollars from us over two years.
He has only given us $2 million back. Furthermore, despite the fact that
the campus is composed of over 50 percent ethnic minority enrollment,
currently minorities make up about 15 percent of the Fresno State student
government.
As president, I will:
•Fight against the tax on education by lobbying legislators.
•Increase the representation of diversity in student government.
•Push for student inclusion in university policy.
•Hold student government accountable for equal opportunity practices.
•Ensure that no eligible student is turned away from voting booths
during campus elections.
•Support a comprehensive approach by working with represented and
under-represented students.
•Appoint committed students to AS and campuswide committees.
•Encourage more students to attend the California Higher Education
Student Summit, where students from all the 23 CSUs join to lobby at the
capitol together.
•Bring the statewide, Valley regional, and local political experience
I have accumulated during six years to my AS presidency.
•Work with honesty and dedication.

My passion for Fresno State students and my enjoyment of being involved
on campus are what made me know that I want to serve as the AS president.
I have been involved with AS for two years, last year as a Senator and
this year as the vice president of finance, and I have found AS to be
a wonderful venue for involvement and activism.
I want to serve as AS president because I believe AS is a wonderful resource
for students and I want to make sure as many students as possible are
knowledgeable about, and are benefiting from, AS.
As president, I will:
•Fight tuition increases by helping the voices of our students to
be heard locally and at the capitol. I will continue to foster the lobby
corps that was started this year on campus.
•Investigate the parking issue; a parking structure would be very
expensive and if one was built, our fees would probably go up. Thus, I
think this situation needs some looking into.
•Try to have an impact on textbook prices. Other campuses, such
as CSU Long Beach, have worked with their bookstore and have started programs
to lower textbook prices. This is something we should think about doing.
•Encourage student representation in campus decision-making by making
sure students are on as many campus committees and AS committees as possible.
•Foster opportunities for involvement on campus by publicizing for
clubs to apply for event funding from AS (this year, about $90,000 has
been allocated to clubs).
•Promote the accessibility of AS by publicizing.
