'DOG BITESWomen’s Tennis The Fresno State women’s team remained ranked No. 20 in the nation in Tuesday’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. The Bulldogs are 1-0 after a 5-2 victory over No. 58 Texas Christian. The team meets No. 11 UCLA Feb. 13. In a stretch of seven straight road games against ranked opponents, the Bulldogs also meet No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 California. Men’s Tennis The men’s team dropped a spot, to No. 37 after dropping road matches to No. 6 UCLA and No. 19 USC last week. The Bulldogs lost to UCLA 7-0 on Thursday, before losing 5-2 to USC Saturday. The Bulldogs are 2-2 on the season and will meet No. 38 Arizona on Saturday and No. 22 Rice on Sunday in Houston. Wrestling The Bulldogs split road matches this weekend with a 24-10 win to Oregon and a 27-21 loss to Oregon State. Fresno State (4-7) meets Cal Poly Thursday at 7 p.m. at the North Gym. Fresno State’s Casey Olson, ranked No. 10 at 149 pounds, beat No. 20 Tony Hook of Oregon State 6-1. Heavyweight Clint Walbeck (No. 11 in the nation) also made a statement, pinning Oregon State’s Jamie Rakevich in 4 minutes, 45 seconds. Student-Athletes Fresno State was one of three Western Athletic Conference schools with at least 25 student-athletes earning all-academic honors in the conference for fall 2003 sports. The WAC honored 186 total student-athletes among the 10 member institutions. To be eligible for honors a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, must have at least a 3.2 grade point average and must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competitions. Eight football players made the list, led by linebacker Kyle Goodman’s 3.66 GPA. The sophomore is a business major. Seven members of the women’s cross country team were honored, led by the 3.58 GPA of junior biology major Nicolin Neal. The women’s soccer team placed five players on the list, led by senior Kristyn Kellog’s 3.90 as a dietetics major.\ The volleyball team also had five honorees, led by junior liberal studies major Tina Brennan’s 3.86. |
