Top 'Dogs alumni gala honors graduates for hardwork, dedication

Twelve outstanding alumni awards of 2003 recipients were honored in the third annual Top ‘Dog Alumni Awards Gala at the Save Mart Center Thursday night.

A 50th Distinguished Alumna Award—the highest honor given by the Fresno State Alumni Association was presented to Joy Covey, former chief financial officer of Amazon.com.

The outstanding alumni awards were presented to 10 alumni from each of the eight academic schools as well as the Division of Student Affairs and the Athletics Department for making a difference in their profession and community.

The outstanding alumni this year are: Robert Beltran, Laura Berg, Robert Coyle, Octavia Diener, Alan Dorfmeier, Donna Hudson, Jean-Mari Peltier, Karen A. Pendleton, Richard A. Shehadey and Jeff Tedford.

Sister Ruth Marie Nickerson was presented the Arthur Safstrom Service Award for various support to community and the university.

The wife of the late Columbia space shuttle commander and Fresno State outstanding alumni of 2002, Rick Husband, spoke at the Top ‘Dog Alumni Awards Gala and accepted last year’s award for him.

The recipients of the 2003 Fresno State Alumni Association Scholarship as well as evening promoters were recognized at the gala dinner.

About 500 guests: Top Dog Alumni Award recipients and their families, Alumni Association Scholarship recipients, donors and others attended the event.

Covey is the president of the Beagle Foundation, a member of the board of directors of JetBlue Airways and a trustee of the Santa Fe Institute.

She graduated summa cum laude with a BS degree in business administration from Fresno State.
