Tailgating’s out in favor of new pre-game fan pastime: ‘picknicking’Bulldog fans may have returned to their vehicles after one of the previous football games this year to find a yellow sheet of paper tucked under the windshield wiper. These are the new rules given to fans to abide by when tailgating. Tailgating refers to anyone who wants to drink alcohol before the game. But not everyone is happy about the new rules. “ That’s what tailgating is all about—being able to drink alcohol before the game,” said Eric Kwong, an information systems major. “They’re taking the fun out of it.” Many tailgaters have found these new rules have put a cramp in their pre-game enjoyment. To replace tailgating, a new type of pre-game activity has been named: It is called “picnicking,” where beverages must be non-alcoholic. A few designated parking lots will still allow alcohol for a fee. Not everyone is disappointed with the new idea of picnicking. They said this was a step that had to be done because Fresno State fans were getting too out of control. “ I think it’s good we don’t have tailgating anymore, because then you won’t have fans throwing screw drivers at the visitors,” said Scott Gandy, a psychology major. “If fans start doing this, they will be lucky if any team will come play them.” The new rules are strict but simple. Tailgating with alcohol can only be done in lot P with a $10 charge per game. But kegs are not allowed. To park in any of the parking lots on campus will carry a $2 charge. Those who normally tailgate in red, white, yellow, gray and purple sections may still drink, but tailgating with alcohol will not be permitted in lots A, B, C, J, V, D or E. Those with any questions about the new policy can call the University Police Department at 278-2132 or, to purchase a parking permit in advance, call 278-DOGS. |
