Women's soccer earns 1-1 tie in double-overtime game

Sophomore forward/midfielder Koleen Anderson heads the ball.

The Fresno State women’s soccer team battled UC-Riverside to a 1-1 stalemate in double overtime Wednesday evening at Bulldog stadium.

The Bulldogs goal came nearly 20 minutes in off the foot of sophomore forward Kortney Lewis assisted by sophomore forward Katri Nokso-Koivisto.

Many scoring opportunities followed for the Bulldogs, who had 10 shots on goal in the first half.

Lewis sent a cross to freshman forward Cortney Sobrero which was volleyed toward the net, just missing the goal.

The Bulldogs were up by one goal at the half and allowed only three shots.

UC-Riverside forward Kelly Ferguson found the net with 23 minutes left in the second half to put the Highlanders on the board, tying the game 1-1.

“ We didn’t bring our game, and we played to their level,” said Bulldogs sophomore forward/midfielder Barbara Davis.

With about seven minutes remaining in regulation play, Fresno State’s Sobrero and UC-Riverside’s Renee Scachetti collided when going for the ball. Both players received stitches but are said to be OK.

At the end of regulation play, the score was 1-1, sending the game into overtime.

After 10 minutes of overtime play, the score remained tied, and the game went into a second overtime.

In the second overtime, the Bulldogs had five shots but were unable to put the ball in the net.

With about five minutes remaining, Lewis connected with midfielder Eriko Yoshiki who passed the ball to midfielder Erin Sayegusa, who took a shot that went just wide.

Although both teams had many scoring opportunities, neither was able to penetrate the net and the final score was 1-1.

“ There were times when we did well,” Davis said, “and times when we got lazy.”

The Bulldogs out-shot the Highlanders 23-13 and allowed only two corner kicks.

Both teams played aggressively, earning a total of 42 fouls, 21 for each team.

Freshman goalkeeper Jeannette Paine saw 110 minutes of playing time and earned a total of six saves.

The Bulldogs will travel to Seattle to play No. 14 Washington Friday at 7 p.m. in the Husky/Nike Invitational.
