Over-60 couple sits front and center

Dave & Lorraine Fultz (sitting on right) bought season tickets in the front row of the student section so they could see the game.

Wedged in between some of the most vocal, energetic fans in the student section of Bulldog Stadium were two Fresno State supporters who didn’t do much of anything.

Dave Fultz, 65, with his wife Lorraine, sat expressionless, listening to the broadcast with radio earplugs, while younger students around him stood and cheered for most of the game.

Fultz said he doesn’t understand why the students stand the whole time.

“ Why come to a game when you’re going to stand for the entire game?” Fultz said. “I come to see the game. I don’t get involved in all this crap.”

Although he looked unhappy to be surrounded by screaming students, many almost 30 years younger than him, Fultz said there was no other place in the stadium he’d rather be.

“ They get loud and everything, but it’s fun sitting here,” Fultz said. “You get the feel of what college football is all about.”

There’s that, plus it’s cheap.

“ It’s only $56 a seat, so I’m not going to pay to sit over there when I could sit over here,” Fultz said. “As long as I’m a student, I’ll take advantage of it.”

Fultz said he and his wife, both students in the over-60 program at Fresno State, have been watching games from the student section for four years, but this was the first time they’ve gotten seats in the front row.

It was no accident. Fultz said he has been trying to get the front row tickets for a couple of years so 5-foot-tall Lorraine would be able to see the field, but he hadn’t been able to get tickets early enough.

“ A couple years ago there were a lot of middle-aged people sitting in this section,” Fultz said. “Then the damn students took over.”

But Fultz got what he wanted this year. He just woke up early.

“ This year, I found out when they were opening the doors, and I was here at nine o’clock in the morning to get my seats,” Fultz said.

Fultz, who said he’s been enjoying football games since he went to college right after high school, said nothing has changed in the rowdy student section since then.

“ You still go to have a good time, but back then, you didn’t get to drink in the stands like you do now,” Fultz said
