Why is it nearly impossible to survive with one job?
I work two different jobs and an internship, and even then, I wouldn’t make enough income to get approved for a one-bedroom apartment in Fresno. The cost of living has gotten out of hand.
For many students, living at home or having roommates is the only realistic option. There’s nothing wrong with that. It saves money. But personally, I enjoy my freedom and privacy.
The cost of living has only risen over the years. In California, the housing costs consistently rank among the highest in the country. There is a growing gap between wages and the cost of housing across the country, leaving many first-time renters priced out of the market.
As young college students and soon-to-be graduates, we have to start preparing for the future. We’re told to work hard, build our resumes and gain experience. But what happens when doing all of that still isn’t enough to afford basic independence?
Students are trying to build careers, not just survive. Many are forced to rely on serving jobs or side hustles just to make ends meet. The jobs that pay, like serving, don’t always move students forward in the industries they’re trying to break into.
Don’t get me started on the price of groceries and gas. The prices continue to rise, putting even more pressure on already tight budgets.
Students have to take on so much pressure. Balancing school, work and financial stress leaves little time for rest and social life. This isn’t just about a lack of effort. It’s about the cost of living that no longer matches what young people are realistically able to earn right out of college.
Take me back to the days when rent was $600.
