Old Town Clovis is home to eight antique shops, each with a distinct character of their own.
Old Town Clovis is also the scene where young people are taking up antiquing as a hobby. Sarah Hunt typically grabs a cup of coffee from Kuppa Joy and then goes antiquing with her friends.
“I love how old everything looks and how much history it has behind it,” Hunt said.
Whether it’s to own something with character or to take a look into the past, the antique shops in Old Town Clovis have just about everything to offer. For old souls who reminisce on the rock and roll era, the Clovis Antique Mall is a must.
Located at 532 5th St., Clovis Antique Mall is the biggest antique shop in the area, as the shop is two stories tall and has an old-school Americana aesthetic to it.
The shop has more junky, miscellaneous items to offer, but still maintains an old, vintage charm. One of the more notable aspects of the shop is its vinyl record area against the back wall of the second floor.
The vinyl record area is filled with mid-20th century vinyl records from old-school artists such as Bobby Rydell, Ricky Nelson and Dion.
“I love various little things, especially when they’re centered around Fresno,” said Alexander Aguilar, a Clovis Antique Mall customer. “It’s just entertaining to see a lot of moments through time.”
Fifth Street Antiques, located at 460 Pollasky Ave., prides itself on a welcoming environment and great customer service.
“We tend to be knowledgeable about our merchandise, we put in a lot of time displaying it carefully so it looks good,” said Eric Rollins, a Fifth Street Antique Mall dealer. “It comes down to the work that the people put in.”
Military brats would be right at home here, as this shop has military memorabilia such as badges, uniforms and arms. One of the oldest items in the antique shop includes a Farmers’ Almanac from 1816.
“They [are younger people] generally looking for something fun, something that maybe their grandma or their mom had when they were kids,” Rollins said. “A lot of people tend to like what they associate with their childhood.”
Once Upon a Time Gifts, Antiques & Shabby Chic is cottagecore galore. Located at 440 Pollasky Ave., the shop is tidy and has more furniture and decorations than other antique shops. What sets this shop apart from the other shops is that it upcycles and repurposes furniture brought into the shop, giving the items a more refined look.
“The younger crowd are into the vintage clothes, the vintage records, the vintage books and the vintage knick knacks,” said Jennifer Green, the owner of Once Upon a Time Gifts, Antiques & Shabby Chic.
The Original 4th Street Antique Mall has a more rustic environment. Located at 402 Pollasky Ave., some items to expect include clothing, books, yearbooks and furniture.
This shop is great for book lovers, as it has a book section that any book lover can get lost in. The shop also provides a collection of yearbook photos and a changing room for those looking to shop for some clothes.
“You would never find half the stuff you find here in the store,” said Brooke Hartwig, a customer at The Original 4th Street Antique Mall. “Everything is so mass-produced and generic, and when you come to an antique store, you really never know what you’re gonna find.”
The Old Town Clovis antique shops are a part of a wider community that promotes local businesses in the area. There are coffee shops, ice cream shops and restaurants available for customers taking an antique trip in Old Town.
“We have a unique place in downtown, you can go have something good to eat, there’s entertainment, there’s events that happen in Old Town all the time and you could spend a whole day going through antique shops,” Rollins said. “We’ve kind of greeted this neat little environment.”
The antique shops are typically open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, though hours change on Sundays for some shops.
