Last semester, I had a class that ended at 9 p.m. By the time I walked out, I was tired and hungry with tons of homework I had to do that night. Every food spot on campus had already closed hours earlier. It was frustrating, especially knowing that I wasn’t the only one wandering around with nowhere to go.
Fresno State has so many food options on campus: The Bucket, Panda Express, Subway, Taco Bell and Habit Burger & Grill. However, all of these places close at 5 p.m. every day.
It makes no sense that most places on campus close at 5 p.m. when classes continue well into the evening, some as late as 9 p.m. This scheduling disconnect leaves night students, many who come straight from work after having a long day on campus, with few options for food.
A university that prides itself on serving many different types of students should recognize that not everyone operates on a usual 9-to-5 schedule. Keeping essential campus food facilities open later isn’t just convenient, it’s a matter of support.
Correction: According to Lisa Bell, the public information officer for Fresno State, “Dining services available after 5 p.m. are as follows:
- The Dining Hall is open until 9pm Monday-Thursday and 8pm Friday-Sunday
- Habit and Taco Bell are open until 6pm Monday-Thursday
- Starbucks is open until 8pm Sunday-Thursday
- North Gym Paws-N-Go is open until 7pm Monday-Thursday
- Peter’s Paws-N-Go is open until 7:30pm Monday-Thursday
- Juice it Up is open until 7pm Monday-Thursday”

I agree, I come to classes after a full day of work and having spaces to actually get something to eat after getting out of class, after 8pm, and studying would be a great support. I think it would also open up job opportunities for students that live on campus that may like having a job close to home that would work better into their schedule. Someone please help make this a possibility!
