Parking on the Fresno State campus has become a hot topic of conversation, with the “issue” even being brought up with Associated Student, Inc. presidential candidates promising to do something if elected.
The conversation has gone so far that students are asking for a parking garage, similar to Fresno City College.
But the issue isn’t that deep.
I drive by the Save Mart Center on my way to school and see the same thing every day– empty spaces.
Whether I am getting to school early in the morning for my 8 a.m. class or coming during a busier time of day, there are nothing but parking spaces.
So why are there so many complaints about parking being an issue?
Students are not willing to come to school earlier or walk for more than five minutes.
All of their “problems” would go away if they just planned a little bit better.
Even then, I don’t understand how students fail to find parking, with or without going to the Save Mart Center. In my nearly three years of going to school here, I have failed to find parking in the P5 lot just once.
The reason I didn’t find parking that day was because I showed up to campus later than normal, when more people are on campus.
During that one instance, I chose to take it under the chin and park in the nearly empty Save Mart Center parking lot. My normal five-minute walk turned to a 10-minute walk. No big deal.
The idea of building a parking structure is outrageous.
Where would the money come from?
Students are already upset about the $495 student fee increase, so a construction project of this magnitude would certainly cost a lot.
But in general, parking is not an issue for students, let alone one that the school should concern itself with.
It simply takes leaving your house a little earlier, as well as a willingness to walk longer distances.
