A suspect remains at large after an officer-involved shooting at Fresno State’s campus on Sunday morning.
The Fresno Police Department responded to a call at approximately 7:30 a.m. today about an in-progress home burglary, ABC30 reported.
According to Interim Police Chief Mindy Casto, there were three suspects involved wearing vests and masks claiming to be police officers to enter the home.
The driver of the vehicle was shot after they jumped out of the car. The suspect is currently in surgery, Casto said.
The second suspect is in custody.
According to an email from Campus Communications sent at 10:48 a.m. Sunday, the intersection between Shaw and Maple Avenues is closed after the incident on Shaw and Backer Avenues.
The individuals stole a large safe from the home but abandoned it after an in-person confrontation with a police officer.
They then took off in a car almost running over the officer.
The officer then fired his weapon and no one was hurt.
The suspects fled the scene and drove onto Fresno State’s campus.
Using a PIT maneuver, the vehicle was stopped at Maple and Keats Avenues, and two suspects were taken into custody.
A K-9 unit was also involved and although shots were fired, it remains unclear if the suspects fired shots as well.
The suspects were armed and investigators are now in possession of one firearm.
The victim of the home robbery was not injured.
The investigation is ongoing and more information will be made available after investigators review surveillance and body camera footage.
The intersections will be closed for the next several hours.
“Avoid coming onto campus today via Shaw/Maple as the area of Maple/Barton will be closed off for the next 8-10 hours,” the email reads.
Campus officials say access to the intersection is anticipated to be available again on Monday.
No students, staff or faculty members were involved, and Fresno PD will handle all further communications regarding the situation.
The investigation is ongoing and more information will be made available after investigators review surveillance and body camera footage.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Fresno PD.
