The Fresno Police Department is investigating a hit-and-run accident on Fresno State’s campus after a vehicle collided into the Water, Energy and Technology (WET) Building on Wednesday morning.
Police say the incident occurred at the corner of Barstow and Chestnut near the roundabout around 2 a.m. and was reported at 2:12 a.m.
The building was empty and no injuries have been reported.
According to Fresno State Police Chief Anthony Martinez, the dispatch team arrived on scene shortly after the call.
“When we arrived, we saw that it was a single vehicle traffic collision with a car into the WET building,” Martinez said. “Upon investigation, we saw that the driver had fled, so this was a hit-and-run.”
After further investigation police determined that the vehicle was headed southbound on Chestnut Avenue and began hitting street signs before ultimately crashing into the WET building.
Fresno State Police is no longer handling the investigation and the Fresno Police Department has taken over.
“Because the accident actually started out on Chestnut Avenue, that is the jurisdiction of Fresno PD,” Martinez said.
Fresno State Facilities Management along with Fresno Police officers are currently patrolling the scene.
The building has been determined to be structurally safe after the Fresno Fire Department inspected the area.
The vehicle has been removed from the scene and the investigation is ongoing as the search for the driver continues. There are currently no updates as to who the person is. Police also determined that the vehicle was not reported stolen.
The cost of the damages is also yet to be assessed.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
