The cannabis-centric “4/20 holiday” has been celebrated for years, originating in the 1970s after five San Rafael High School students called the “Waldo’s” would meet everyday after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke weed together. Eventually, the students used “420” as a code word for smoking.
The phenomenon had evolved into people meeting at 4:20 p.m. on 4/20 for “4-20ing” by the 1990s. The day has turned into people gathering to practice recreational smoking at large group events, AP news reported.
