Fresno State’s swim and dive team wrapped up the season and is now focused on the Mountain West Championships.

The championships will be hosted in Houston, Texas, from Feb. 15-18. The ‘Dogs finished the season with a 4-3 overall record.

They kicked off the season on Oct. 21 with a two-meet win streak, beating University of the Pacific, 206-77, and Fresno Pacific, 215-61.

They then fell short to the University of Nevada, 173-127, on Oct. 29.

Momentum shifted back for the ‘Dogs on Jan. 12 when they beat Pepperdine, 148.5-95.5.

However, they continued on a two-meet loss streak, losing to California State University, Bakersfield, 166-122, on Jan. 13, and the University of California, Davis, 188-112, on Jan. 21.

The ‘Dogs closed off the regular season with a 172-117 win against Mountain West Conference member San Jose State Jan. 28, which was also senior day. Fresno State recognized seven seniors that day: Silvia Alessio, Athena Clayson, Mackenzie Hutler, Sammie Keith, Eydis Osk Kolbeinsdottir, Alyssa Libang and Maya Gulvady.

Throughout the season, the ‘Dogs also competed in invitational tournaments that aren’t counted toward the overall record, such as the Chick-Fil-A Invite, Trojan Diving Invitational, Utah Tech Invitational, Lumberjack Diving Invite and the UCLA Diving Invite.

Fresno State has had some team members recognized by the Mountain West during the season.

Senior diver Alessio was named Mountain West diver of the week twice. The first time was early in the season during the week of Oct. 11, and the second time was two weeks later during the week of Oct. 25.

That same week Samantha Arredondo was recognized as the Mountain West freshman of the week. Arredondo competes in the breaststroke and freestyle events.

Senior Clayson is the most recent ‘Dog to be recognized. She competes in the freestyle and backstroke events and was named the Mountain West swimmer of the week for the week of Jan. 17.

Last season, Fresno State received sixth place at the Mountain West Championships, and this season they hope to turn that around.
