Associated Students Inc. (ASI) introduced its 2022-23 senate members during the ASI Installation Ceremony on June 1.
“Being a part of ASI is an honor and a privilege. ASI serves as the official voice of the students, a vehicle to implement effective and meaningful change throughout the campus community,” said the 2021-22 ASI President D’Aungillique Jackson.
Cinthya Arriaga-Sanchez will take over the position as ASI president for 2022-23. She won the seat with a 21-vote margin during the special election process in May.
Arriaga-Sanchez, a senior majoring in recreational therapy and minoring in Spanish, joined the presidential race during the special election process. This will be her first time working within ASI.
The ceremony was officiated by Tyler Maxwell, vice president of the Fresno City Council, who swore in the new senators. He noted the importance of the responsibilities ASI senators hold within the campus, emphasizing that it is “not just a fancy title for a resume in the future.”
“Serving in elected office boils down to essentially one goal, [and] that’s improving the lives of those that you serve,” Maxwell said.
“It’s a responsibility to lift up your fellow student body to make your lives and experiences on this campus better.”
Maxwell congratulated the newly elected ASI senators, providing them with a certificate signed by Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer and himself.
Following the installation ceremony, ASI held its first senate meeting for the upcoming year.
The senate moved to elect a new executive vice president for the 2022-23 term, with senators David Klein and Karen Carrillo nominated for the position. Karen Carrillo won the position with a majority vote.
“Before I continue this meeting, I just want to say thank you so much for all of your guys’ support, and I really look forward to working with each and every one of you guys as individuals and as a cohort together,” Carrillo said.
