Fresno State baseball defeated University of San Francisco

Fresno State’s baseball team put up 16 runs against University of San Francisco in a 16-2 victory Tuesday night at Pete Beiden field at Bob Bennett Stadium.  

The Diamond ‘Dogs produced 17 hits that included four players with extra base hits. The performance is the team’s second consecutive win in which they have scored at least 14 runs. 

Fresno State bounced backed and are over the .500 mark as their overall record improves to 21-20 (10-8 Mountain West).

USF started by putting runners in scoring positions with two hits in the first inning, as well as starting the second inning off with a triple from Kyle Knell. However neither team managed to score a run through the first two innings.­

In the third inning, the Bulldogs put themselves on the board first when Zach Morgan hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Bobby Blandford. 

USF responded the next inning as Knell hit a solo home run to left-center field, tying the game 1-1.

­However, just as the game began to look like a low-scoring affair, Fresno State’s offense exploded.­

The Bulldogs scored four runs in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Ben Newton drew a walk to score the first run of the inning. 

Blandford  followed up with a sacrifice fly to left field and Travis Welker bunted down the first base line for an RBI single. 

Later in the inning, Morgan earned another RBI with a single to left field, and Welker scored off a throwing error by catcher Michael Campagna. 

The ‘Dogs added to their­ 6-1, and extended it by one run when Payton Allen scored.

In the sixth inning Fresno State added four more runs which included Morgan and Bologna picking up a couple more RBI. Tommy Hopfe picked up an extra base hit through an RBI double, and was then hit in by an Allen RBI single. 

Fresno State entered the eighth inning with an 11-1 lead. With their starters out, the Bulldogs scored five more runs. 

These runs began with three consecutive hits, the first being an RBI single from senior Mason Grotto who was followed by Newton and Allen picking up a couple of RBI’s respectively. 

Blake Wink’s RBI double gave the ‘Dogs their 16th run 

Fresno State is averaging 11 runs a game through its last four games as it head into their weekend series against San Diego State,with first pitch set for Friday at 6:05 p.m.
