Fresno State women’s soccer player snags Mountain West honor

Fresno State women’s soccer senior forward Ele Avery was named Mountain West (MW) offensive player of the week.

In the Bulldogs’ return to the Valley after a four-game stint on the road, Avery played an integral role. After starting the season 3-0 for the first time since 2006, Fresno State struggled playing away, going 0-3-1 while being outscored 7-2 during that span.

But the Bulldogs bounced back, beating the Nevada Wolfpack (0-6-2) and the Boise State Broncos (4-3-1) this past weekend. Avery recorded two goals, one assist and four shots in Fresno State’s victories over the weekend.

Both of Avery’s goals were game winners for the Bulldogs. In Friday afternoon’s 3-1 victory against Nevada, she assisted on Kassandra Ceja’s goal in the 12th minute, putting Fresno State up 1-0. Then in the 54th minute, Avery scored to increase Fresno State’s lead to 2-0.

In Sunday’s match against Boise State, Avery scored the only goal of the game in the 66th minute by chipping a right-foot shot to make it 1-0.

This is the first time this season any Fresno State women’s soccer player has achieved a MW offensive honor.

After this past weekend’s performance, The Bulldogs improved to 5-3-1 with a total of 16 points and are tied with the UNLV Rebels (5-2-1) for second place in the West division of the MW. The San Diego State Aztecs (6-2) are in first place with 18 points.

Fresno State will play its last game of the season versus San Jose State (2-6-1) this Saturday at 11 a.m.
