Fresno State wrestling will be cut after the school year, and the program may not have the chance to compete at home.
The Bulldogs’ duals with No. 18 Oklahoma and Oregon State scheduled for Sunday have been canceled due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Fresno State wrestling program, according to the team’s press release.
Oklahoma and Oregon State were scheduled to dual Sunday morning. That match has been canceled as well.
This is the third time that Fresno State had its wrestling meet canceled or postponed in 2021, and it’s the second time that it’s happened at home. The Bulldogs’ home meet against Wyoming scheduled for Jan. 15 was also postponed because of contact tracing in the Fresno State program.
That match can be rescheduled, but if not, Fresno State will go through its final wrestling season without competing once at the Save Mart Center.
A week prior to the Wyoming meet postponement, Fresno State had its meet at Stanford scheduled for Jan. 9 postponed due to public health guidelines in Santa Clara County.
The Bulldogs were entering Sunday looking for their first dual team victory of the season. The team has a 0-6 record after competing in duals in San Luis Obispo, Riverside, and Colorado.
Redshirt senior DJ Lloren and redshirt freshman Kyle Parco both finished the regular season undefeated, each holding a 9-0 record in the 141-pound class. Lloren, who is ranked No. 12 in the country by FloWrestling, had five bonus-point victories this season.
Sophomore Hunter Cruz (6-1) and freshman Haiden Drury (7-4) also appeared in national rankings this week. Cruz is ranked No. 31 by The Open Mat in the 184-pound class, while Drury checks in at No. 33 in the 133-pound class according to Trackwrestling.
Fresno State’s competition at its out-of-town meets have included two Big 12 teams, North Dakota State and Northern Colorado, who are receiving votes in the coaches’ Top 25 poll.
The Bulldogs will revisit both conference opponents when they take the mat for their next and final scheduled event, the Big 12 championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on March 6 and 7.
