Fresno State and San Jose State game called off by Mountain West

The Valley Trophy will remain in San Jose for another year.

On Thursday night, the Mountain West (MW) announced that Fresno State’s game on Saturday, Nov. 21 against San José State is canceled after a positive COVID-19 case was confirmed within the Fresno State football program.

Fresno State athletics director Terry Tumey released a statement confirming the positive cases that led to the cancellation.

“Though we have dutifully followed all proper protocols, and we have received continual guidance from the Fresno County Department of Public Health, we unfortunately have confirmed a positive case of COVID-19 within our football program,” Tumey said.

“In coordination with the Fresno County Department of Public Health and extensive contact tracing efforts, we have identified additional student-athletes who, per public health protocols, are required to be quarantined as a precaution.”

Down below is the tweet from the MW.

With the Bulldogs unable to play, the MW has canceled the game and has declared it a no contest.

Due to the shortened eight-game MW season, there is no room to reschedule canceled games. Dates such as the MW Championship have already been set which leads to a deadline for teams to finish their regular season.

This is the third MW game to be canceled this week and the first time the Bulldogs have had a game canceled due to COVID-19.

On Wednesday, the MW canceled Utah State’s game against Wyoming as well as UNLV’s game against Colorado State University.

These cancellations could affect the MW championship this year as the top two winningest teams in the MW conference will play in the championship game.
