Fresno State Creamery recalls butter spread due to contamination concern

The Fresno State Creamery is recalling 40 15-ounce containers of Fresno State Butter Spread-Regular that was sold at the Gibson Farm Market and one container that was sold off site.

The voluntary recall is due to a potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes, according to a university news release. The recalled butter spread has a product code of 249 and a sell by date from 02/01/20 or 08/01/20.

Those who have purchased the specified butter spread are asked to return all products with the product codes stated above for a full refund at the Gibson Farm Market, the release stated.

At this time, there have been no reports of illness associated with the recalled product. The Fresno State Creamery is voluntarily issuing a recall as a precaution. No other Fresno State Creamery products are said to be impacted.

Fresno State’s Creamery is inspected by the Department of Milk and Dairy Food Safety branch of the California Department of Food and Agriculture and adheres to strict food-processing protocols.

Listeria monocytogenes causes listeriosis, symptoms of which include a high temperature, aches and pains, chills, vomiting and/or diarrhea, the release stated.

If customers feel ill, they should seek medical care and contact their physician about eating possibly contaminated food. This is especially important for those who are pregnant, age 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system.

Questions from customers may be directed to Dr. Michael Thomas Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 559-278-2061.
