Fresno State to hold organ registry event after police chief gets lung transplant

Fresno State will hold an organ registry event after the university police chief underwent a successful lung transplant, according to a Thursday news release.

A three-day blood drive and organ registry event is scheduled for 3 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 in the University Dining Hall and will continue from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 19 and 20, the university said. The Central California Blood Center and Donor Network West are partnering with the university for the event.

Chief David Huerta has served at the university for 14 years, according to the university. He underwent a lung transplant in August and required several blood transfusions.

“He is alive today thanks to an organ donor, and because someone said yes to giving blood,” the university said in the news release.
