Fresno State introduces first group of participants in the Integrated Math Program

The Fresno State Department of Mathematics will introduce its first group of participants in the Integrated Math Program, which will allow math majors to attain their bachelor’s degrees and teaching credentials within four years, at least a year faster than previously possible, according to a university news release.

The new program is an initiative implemented in response to a shortage of math teachers throughout California. It aims to get students who are proficient in math interested in becoming high school math teachers.

“California has a huge shortage of math teachers,” said Dr. Rajee Amarasinghe, chair of Fresno State’s Mathematics Department. “And the Valley is impacted more than any other place in the state.”

Amarasinghe has been awarded the inaugural Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award for his development of this and other innovative programs within his department. He is one of 26 faculty members from 21 of the 23 CSU campuses to receive the award, which will be presented on Oct. 17-18 at San Diego State University.
