White shoots for last-minute win

Fresno State women’s basketball defeated Weber State in a nail-biting game, 81-78 on Wednesday at the Save Mart Center.

With 2.1 seconds left in a tied game, junior Candice White sank a game-clinching 3-pointer to secure the win for the ‘Dogs.

In addition to White’s 3-pointer, the 12 made 3-pointers are a season-high for Fresno State, passing the 11 they made against Pacific on Dec. 7.

Another high of the day, freshman Aly Gamez grabbed a season-high of seven rebounds and 18 points, 11 of them in the first 10 minutes.

In the first period it was Gamez who made 57 percent of the points for the ‘Dogs. Leading them on a 10-4 run to tie the game 19-19.

Heading to the locker room in the half, the ‘Dogs controlled the lead 32-21 after nine lead changes.

Both teams shot under 40 percent coming out of the second quarter.

As for the third quarter, the ‘Dogs shot 50 percent while the Wildcats shot 53 percent to take the lead 58-57.

With the back and forth during the final period, the ‘Dogs were on top, 78-75 with 9.6 seconds to go. But it was a foul on Webers’ Larryn Brooks that knocked in three free throws to tie the game.

With 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in the contest, White came in clutch for the ‘Dogs to secure the 81-78 win in the last two seconds.

White also went 2-for-2 from the free throw line, extending her streak to 45 straight this season and 51 straight from last season, making her ninth all-time in Division I history.

Fresno State will start Mountain West play against Nevada on Dec. 28 in Reno.
