Plant Science Club receives top honors at national contest

Fresno State’s Plant Science Club won the president’s award at the Students of Agronomy, Soils and Environmental Sciences national club speech contest.

This is the club’s fourth time winning the award since 2012. They beat other university teams including Iowa State, Kansas State and Oklahoma State.

The event was held on Oct. 22 at the Tri-Societies National Conference (American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America) in Tampa, Florida.

The team focused their presentation on the club’s dedication to community service, educational outreach and professionalism in the industry.

“I could not be more proud of our club members for their representation of our University and California agriculture,” said senior club president Vivien Maier, of Belmont.

Adding, “The conference was also an incredible opportunity to meet industry leaders and fellow agricultural students and learn more about research being conducted internationally that is tied to our future careers.”

The team also attended multiple workshops at the conference pertaining to preparing for a professional career in agriculture as well as a quiz bowl and crop judging competition.
