The CW’s time-traveling adventure series, “Legends of Tomorrow,” has re-emerged from the time stream.
After a poorly received first season but a critically acclaimed second season, the pressure is high for the third iteration of the series to perform well.
Season 2 closed out with the team returning to the present day to find dinosaurs running amok and an assortment of all new troubles.
While at San Diego Comic Con this summer, The Collegian spoke with the cast to get the inside scoop on the upcoming season. With the possibilities for the third season completely wide open, crew members were tight-lipped about how their characters’ latest problem might be resolved.
Executive producer Phil Klemmer, however, was willing to divulge a few bits of information on some of the eras that will be seen throughout the next season.
“We’re going to take a little visit to Ancient Rome,” Klemmer said. “And then we’ll have Billy Zane in the role of P.T. Barnum, and we’re going back to the 19th century circus.”
In addition to the new time periods to visit, this season will feature a brand new series regular portrayed by actress Tala Ashe.
Ashe, who some might recognize from series such as “American Odyssey” or “Smash,” had just met her new fellow cast members the same day.
Ashe will portray a new character from the future and said she was excited to explore her role in the series. She explained that her character will lock horns with a number of different team members as a result of her character’s origin.
“She is a woman who is strong and speaks her mind,” Ashe said. “She has a different philosophical approach to time travel.”
Speaking more about the team, Caity Lotz, who plays the team’s Sara Lance/White Canary and is a carryover from “Arrow,” spoke briefly about her newfound role as leader of the team.
Lance took over as captain of the Waverider last season after the departure of Arthur Darvill’s Rip Hunter.
“For so many people, they’re like, ‘Wow, a woman is in charge. Crazy!’” Lotz said. “Is it really that big of a deal though? It seemed like a natural progression of the character.”
Despite his long absence from the series, Hunter returned at the end of last season and is scheduled to recur in the upcoming season. Lotz explained the characters’ potentially querulous relationship with a slight tease for the upcoming season.
Lotz said that upon his return, Hunter has formed a special new elite task force for solving time travel-related issues. Lotz explained the dynamic between the two teams as something akin to a feuding FBI and a local police force.
“It’s always been about these people wanting to prove themselves, wanting to make the world better, and they find themselves in this position again,” Lotz said. “Of course we mess everything up, but sometimes for the better.”
The third season of “Legends of Tomorrow” premiered on Oct. 10 and airs Tuesday nights on The CW.
