A panel discussion on “Fake News, Alternative Facts and Media Bias” will feature The Fresno Bee’s Jim Boren, journalist Lloyd Carter, PowerTalk 96.7 radio host Trevor Carey and Fresno State media, communications and journalism professor and event moderator Faith Sidlow.

The free, public event, presented by Friends of the Madden Library, will be Friday, Oct. 27 in the library beginning with a reception at 6p.m. followed by the program at 6:30 p.m. The format will be a panel discussion moderated by Sidlow with the panelists representing a broad spectrum of political views.

Boren has served as executive editor and senior vice president of The Bee since 2012. Boren is a veteran California journalist who has written extensively about politics and public policy for more than four decades. In his previous position at The Bee, he oversaw production of the opinion pages. Boren covered politics for 15 years prior to moving to the editorial pages in 1995. He has covered every level of politics including city council elections, governor races and presidential campaigns. One of his columns led to the creation of the annual Rose­Ann Vuich Award for Ethical Leadership, which recognizes local elected officials who have met high ethical standards. He began working at The Bee while he was still a journalism student at Fresno State.

Carter was a reporter for more than two decades for United Press International and The Fresno Bee in Fresno and San Francisco. He is best known for his coverage of the bird deformities at the Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge in the mid-1980s, for which he won several statewide journalism awards. He continues to write op-ed pieces for California newspapers on water issues and hosts a monthly radio show on water issues on public radio station KFCF in Fresno.

Carey has been the host of “The Trevor Carey Show” on PowerTalk 96.7 and AM 1400 radio since 2015. His program provides a platform for newsmakers to discuss local, state and national issues that have a direct impact on Central California.
