Temporary electrical services to shutdown 22 buildings

Beginning Saturday, Fresno State will be temporarily shutting down the electrical services in 22 buildings on campus.

Buildings affected by the shutdown are Central Plant, Conley Art, Downing Planetarium, Engineering East, Grosse Industrial Technology, Henry Madden Library, Joyal Administration and Kermen Education.

Additional buildings affected are Lot V Solar Array, Music Addition, Peters Business Building, Residence Dining Hall, Satellite Student Union, Science I, Science II, Smittcamp Alumni House, University High School and the University Student Union.

The temporary shutdown will start at 8 p.m. Saturday and will end 8 a.m. Sunday.

Fresno State named as a finalist to host summer art program

Fresno State is a finalist to host the 2017 California State University Summer Arts Program.

The program is an in-residence program, aimed towards students in creative work as well as to bring cultural events to the community.

There will be a community forum with the CSU Summer Arts Program’s committee Thursday at 4 p.m. in Room 194 in the Peters Business Building.

The campus previously hosted the program from 1999 to 2011 and is now competing against Sacramento State for the opportunity to host the program again.

Fresno State president to receive high honor

Fresno State President Dr. Joseph Castro will be receiving the highest honor for leaders abroad by the government of Mexico.

Castro will receive the “Ohtli” award, which is granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Institute for Mexican Abroad.

He will be recognized through the government of Mexico’s consulate in Fresno on Tuesday in the in the Henry Madden Library at the Table Mountain Rancheria Reading Room.

Authors to hold presentation about drought, flood, climate

A presentation by Dr. Lynn Ingram and Frances Malamud-Roam, authors of “The West Without Water: What Past Floods, Droughts and Other Climatic Clues Tell Us About Tomorrow” will be held Thursday.

Ingram is currently a geography and earth and planetary science professor at University of California, Berkeley and Malamud-Roam is a biologist and Caltrans senior environmental planner. ­

The event, sponsored by the Fresno State Interdisciplinary Water Cohort and the Office of the Provost, is open to the public and will be held in the Leon and Peter Peters Education Center Auditorium at 6 p.m.

Student awarded 2016 University Volunteer of the Year

An upcoming Fresno State student, Lilliana Toste will be honored Wednesday as the 2016 University Volunteer of the Year by the Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning at Fresno State.

She will be recognized at the University’s annual Spirit of Service Awards ceremony Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., which is hosted by President Dr. Joseph Castro and his wife, Mary Castro.

In addition to being recognized for her volunteer work, she will receive a $1,500 scholarship from the Marc and Marjorie Radin Community Service Scholarship fund.

Toste, 22, is currently a senior from Lemoore, majoring in communicative disorders and minoring in urban civic education and will be attending Fresno State in the fall for a Master of Arts degree in speech-language pathology.

Fresno State opens new Downtown Center

To offer non-credit professional development courses to the public, Fresno State opened its new Downtown Center at Bitwise South Stadium on Tuesday.

The opening of the new center was celebrated with an open house and ribbon cutting, where guest were able to take a tour of the facility and participate in a workshop.

The center will be offering classes about career development and entrepreneurial skills, business writing, digital marketing, grant writing and more. ­­
