The Fresno State women’s basketball team dominated Fresno Pacific 78-33 Tuesday night at the Save Mart Center.

The ‘Dogs came into the game with an 0-1 record after dropping their season opener 86-68 to UC Riverside on the road.

But Tuesday was a different story. From the tip, the Bulldogs proved to be too much for the Sunbirds.

Fresno State jumped out to an early lead with a 6-0 run to start the game and expanded its lead to 15-5, forcing the Sunbirds to take a timeout to regroup.

At the end of the first quarter, the ‘Dogs had a substantial lead on the Sunbirds, 25-7 with senior Toni Smith leading the team with eight points.

The ‘Dogs did anything and everything they wanted against the Sunbirds, posting eight steals and three blocks, all three credited to sophomore Bego Faz Davalos.

With the great defense, the ‘Dogs held the Sunbirds to just 38 percent shooting from the field, 25 percent from the three-point line in the first half and no trips to the free-throw line.

The ‘Dogs feasted inside the paint on the night with the length and size of Smith and Faz Davalos.

With their presence in the front court, the ‘Dogs pushed their lead to 25 to lead 42-17 at the half.

Things were much closer in the second half as the ‘Dogs barely won the third quarter 12-11. But the tremendous lead created in the first half proved to be enough as the ‘Dogs secured a large, 53-26 lead heading into the final quarter.

With all the damage done in the first three quarters by the ‘Dogs, there was little much the Sunbirds could do in the fourth.

Leading the ‘Dogs on the night in scoring was Smith with 19 points and Faz Davalos was right behind her with 13 points.

The Bulldogs will step on the court once again on Friday as they face the Pac-12’s University of Washington.
