Swimming & Diving: ‘Dogs top Pacific, Oregon State in double dual meet

Square Logo BlueThe Fresno State swimming team dominated its double dual meet Saturday in Stockton.

The Bulldogs picked up a 149-112 win against the University of Pacific, and a 155-107 win against Oregon State, bringing their record to 2-1 on the season.

“I think these were the best dual meets that I’ve ever had at Fresno State,” Fresno State head coach Jeanne Fleck said. “The team swam with confidence. We might not have broken any records, but many of our swimmers really stepped up for the first time this season.”

Freshman Ugne Mazutaityte, senior Brooke Rodriguez, junior Tarryn Rennie and senior Leah Hatayama led the ‘Dogs to a win in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of of 1:46.05.

Hatayama also swam a 23.55 to win the 50 Freestyle and a 51.60 to win the 100 Freestyle.

“[Hatayama] was amazing today,” Fleck said. “Though I believe she had the best meet of all the swimmers, Casey Kennemann was right up there.”

Kennemann contributed with a win in the 200 Freestyle (1:54.42), while Mazutaityte continued her strong backstroke performance with a win in the 100 (57.39) and 200 (2:01.16).

Rodriguez and junior Hailee Baldwin took the top two spots against Pacific in the 100 Breaststroke with times of 1:04.89 and 1:07.34, respectively.

Hatayama, Rodriguez, Kennemann and sophomore Katelin Britton added a win in the 400 Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:30.85.

“They’re all learning,” Fleck said. “We’ve talked about what’s been holding us back from winning. Before the meet, we agreed to forget about the word `win’ and just keep the process going. Every time we get up on that block, we get better.”

The Bulldogs will host their first home meet on Saturday at noon against Fresno Pacific and UC Santa Cruz.

“It’ll be nice to get home and swim in front of our fans,” Fleck said. “We’ll be mixing up some of the events for the swimmers and getting the chance to see what else they can do. It’s going to be a fun meet.”
