The Fresno State women’s soccer team dropped its Mountain West match against New Mexico on Sunday 5-1.
The loss for the ‘Dogs (4-10-1, 3-4-1 MW) comes after losing a close one in San Diego to the Aztecs 2-1, giving Fresno State back-to-back losses in conference play.
New Mexico (7-7-1, 5-2-1) got on board in the middle of the first half as Lobos midfielder Claire Lynch put a shot from inside the box between the post at the 22:55 mark. From there, the floodgates would open up on Fresno State.
New Mexico took very little time to get their second goal at the 27:17 mark from forward Madisyn Olguin. The senior received the ball via Brooke Webster and put it in the corner of the net for the 2-0 lead.
The Lobos kept up the attack as senior forward Korynn Blanksma received a pass via Olguin and broke away from the ‘Dogs’ defensive line and passed the goalkeeper at the 32:19 mark, pushing her team’s lead to 3-0.
The Lobos added two more to their lead in the second half when Lindsey Guice put one in the net from the top of the box in the 59th minute and Quincy Slora connected a header in at the 69th minute mark.
With New Mexico scoring five goals, it would be the most goals the ‘Dogs have given up since giving up seven to North Carolina on Aug. 23.
Fresno State would get on the scoreboard in the 87th minute as sophomore Myra Delgadillo received a ball in the middle of the box and put it in the side of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
The Bulldogs tied with the Lobos with eight shots on goal, but were outshot by the Lobos 21-14.
Bulldog senior Alyssa Cruz had three shots in the match while sophomore Maria Gomez led the squad with five shots on the day, bringing her team-leading total to 32 on the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann started for the ‘Dogs between the post and recorded 72 minutes for the match. She had three saves in match and allowed five goals.
Berwinkel-Kottmann was relieved of goalkeeping duties by sophomore Domenique Banta who played 18 minutes, her first appearance back on the field since Sept. 27 at Wyoming. Banta recorded no saves in the match.
With the back-to-back losses, Fresno State is now in ninth place in Mountain West Conference standings.
