Fresno city council approves interception project

The Fresno City Council approved a contract Thursday that will add a left turn signal at the busy intersection on Bulldog Lane and Cedar Avenue west of the Fresno State campus.

The $283,000 contract, which will fund new signs and crosswalks, was awarded to A-C Electric Co. of Fresno. It is the largest part of the $433,100 allocated to complete the project.

Supported by both Associated Students, Inc. and Fresno State administrators, the turn signal aims to beef up the safety of the intersection that acts as a gateway between campus and Greek housing, athletic facilities and the El Dorado Park neighborhood.

“We see tons of students who go train over there, they live over there, fraternity and sorority row is over there, and now they don’t have to worry about running across or being hit by a car,” said ASI President Moses Menchaca.

ASI passed a resolution calling for construction of the turn signal last year. Citing student safety concerns, they called on the city council to complete the job by the start of the fall 2014 semester.

That resolution came following an April 30, 2014 accident that led to a motorcyclist losing his foot and sustaining various other injuries after crashing into another vehicle at the intersection while making an unprotected turn.

ASI has since worked with Fresno City Councilman Paul Caprioglio to get legislation before city council.

“It’s great,” Menchaca said. “It’s a perfect example of the advocacy and the difference you can make here at Fresno State.”
