Former Fresno State baseball players chest-bumped, high-fived and talked some smack Saturday when they faced the current Fresno State baseball team in the annual alumni game.

But it was the young guys who schooled the alumni with a 7-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Beiden Field.

The alumni kept the game close until Manny Argomaniz hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.

“It’s pretty special that we get to come out and play against these guys,” the senior third baseman said. “We learn from the hard work they have put in and the process they have gone through while playing here, especially from the players that played under coach [Mike] Batesole.”

The alumni hung tough in the beginning, but didn’t expect to keep up with the young guys for long.

“Once we get past the sixth inning, our legs give out, our back gives out, and our arms are not there anymore,” said Terance Frazier, who played at Fresno State in the early 1990s. “We just wanted to win the first five innings, but trying to win a nine-inning game is tough as old guys.”

After graduating from Fresno State, Frazier played professional baseball for his hometown Oakland A’s and the St. Paul Saints of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. He played professionally for four years, then returned to Fresno to establish his own real estate and investment company.

“Our job is to teach the young guys that baseball is still a game,” Frazier said. “We want them to have fun and be excited. We want them to stay here the whole time. After they graduate they can give back, not just financially but by being here in spirit. We’re here to support them.”

The Bulldogs will begin the season Friday at home against UC Irvine. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m.

“We have been working all fall and we feel ready to go,” Argomaniz said. “We have a great schedule as far as playing against teams that were in regionals. It’s going to prepare us for the Mountain West.”
