The Fresno State women’s golf team defended its turf and closed out the Fresno State Classic with four Bulldogs on top of the leaderboard.

Day 1 of competition had the Bulldogs finishing at 17-over par, 297 and 296 for a total score of 593. After the final round on Tuesday, the ‘Dogs finished with a score of 290, giving the team a score of 883 at 19-over.

The Bulldogs had an impressive tournament with three players finishing first, second and third. Individual entry Samantha Spencer finished in fourth place.

Senior Bulldog Madchen Ly led the team on Monday, shooting at 2-over for 36 holes, 72 and 74, totaling 146. On Day 2, Ly shot 71, for a total of 217 and ended the tournament in first place shooting at 1-over.

Junior Hannah Sodersten finished the Classic in second place after shooting 74, 74 and 70 for a total score of 218 at 2-over.

The pair fought for first place, with Ly taking the tournament title with a 5-foot putt on the final hole.

“It was really good to win,” Ly said. “This is my first collegiate win, and to win the home tournament and have my family, my teammates and my coaches there was pretty awesome.”

Sophomore Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir shot 71, 78 and 72 for a score of 221, placing her third at 5-over. Freshman Mimi Ho ended the tournament tied at 12th place, 80, 72, 78 for 230 at 14-over. Final team member, sophomore Laura Scrivner, shot at 17-over, 80, 76, 77 for 233.

Scrivner set a personal goal to beat the team that she and her partner were playing against during the final round, because she hadn’t been hitting her best.

“I ended up battling back and beat her by two in the end.” Scrivner said.

Of the individual competitors, Bulldog freshman Spencer ended the tournament in fourth place at 7-over for a total of 223. Fresno State junior Sadye Bubsy finished the tournament tied for 25th place, shooting 83, 83 and 79 for 245. And junior Kayla Luis ended the tournament shooting 86, 83 and 89 for 258, finishing in 28th place at 42-over.

The ‘Dogs were followed by Santa Clara which finished at 40-over for 904.

The team is looking to carry the win into the next competition and keep the momentum going.

“It just gives us more confidence,” Ly said.

The Fresno State Classic is the Bulldogs’ only home event for the season. They head to Noblesville, Indiana, to compete in the Hoosier Fall Invitational at the Purgatory Golf Club from Oct. 17-19.
