Puppies and dogs of all shapes and sizes came out to Fresno State early Saturday morning for the 15th annual Wiggle Waggle Walk and Furry 5k.
The event, held by the Valley Animal Center, is a fundraiser and community event to support the non-profit, no kill shelter.
“The event is a fundraiser for the homeless animals at the Valley Animal Center. It’s a great way for dog owners to spend quality time with their pets but also help out a great cause,” said Nina Tonnu, community relations coordinator for Valley Animal Center.
Tonnu said that the idea for the Wiggle Waggle Walk is to have an event that incorporates both the animals and their owners, so both can enjoy.
“The event got started because we wanted to make an event that brought together the community and allowed them to showcase their bond with their animals,” Tonnu said. “We thought, what better way than to have an event exclusively for owners and their canine companions?”
The 5k was added five years ago to the Wiggle Waggle Walk due to the amount of people exercising with their canine companions.
“We had so many individuals who enjoy exercising with their dogs. It gave individuals yet another outlet to bond with their companions while enjoying a day dedicated to the dogs,” Tonnu said.
In addition to the 5k run and walk, which is an interactive 2 mile walk for both pets and owners, there were various vendors, activities and events. This was the first year that the Wiggle Waggle Walk incorporated an adoption center for the public.
“This year’s turnout was great. Our event was bigger than ever. From the early feedback we have received so far, it seemed like both pups and humans had a fun time at the event,” Tonnu said.
This year’s theme was based off the book and HBO series “Game of Thrones.” Participants were encouraged to dress up their furry partners in costumes inspired from the show. Additionally, there was opportunity for a photo shoot for dogs to sit on an “Iron Throne.” There was also a medieval-themed obstacle course for dogs to run around.
Not all dogs and their owners participated in the 5k or the walk, but rather some just came out to enjoy the event.
Bob Betts, a owner of several dogs, brought four to the event.
“This is all their first time,” said Betts, who has two Corgis and two Chihuahua-mixes. “They are all pretty excited to be here.”
