The 114th anniversary of the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Force will be commemorated Wednesday in a Submarine Veterans Celebration on campus.

A submarine veterans celebration Wednesday will feature and 18 ft. submarine float on display near the .

The celebration will begin in the Free Speech Area and shift to the Maple Mall, the site of Fresno State’s Submarine Veterans Memorial.

Fresno State’s Submarine Veterans Memorial, located in the south Maple Mall near the Joyal Administration Building, was built in 2002 and is the first memorial honoring lost submarines and crewmembers to be located on a college campus.

The event’s purpose is to pay respects to lost submarines and submariners — and celebrate the country’s submarine force. An 18-foot submarine float will be on display during the celebration.

Four of the 10 submarine veterans slated to appear at the event are Fresno State graduates.

The celebration, which is expected to begin at 11:30 a.m., will conclude with a cake cutting ceremony where the oldest submariner will pass the cake down to the youngest submariner to signify “the passing of tradition and knowledge for the younger generation,” said Tiffany Marsh of Fresno State’s Student Veterans Organization.

“It’s awesome to have the opportunity to expose the general student body to something like this because there’s so much lack of knowledge for things like that on this campus,” Marsh said.
