Shooting for the title: Paintball team begins tournament play

The UConn Huskies may have won both the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball championships, but Fresno State paintball coach Matt Quinn wants to spoil their party.

The Bulldogs will travel to Lakeland, Fla., this weekend as one of 15 teams competing in the National Collegiate Paintball Association (NCPA) National Championships.

“The UConn guys feel like they are entitled to something because their basketball teams just won the national championships this week,” Quinn said. “So we’re going to try to knock them off their high horse tomorrow morning.”

The club, founded in 2012, will be competing in the national tournament for the second year in a row. It finished 12th in last year’s finals.

Quinn, who is in his first year as coach, said his team is ecstatic to be in the position to play for a national title.

“These guys are pumped,” Quinn said. “The guys are ready to do [this event] again this year.”

In preparation for the competitions, the Bulldogs traveled to Southern California last weekend to practice with the CSU Long Beach 49ers, one of the premier squads on the West Coast.

“It was a good experience,” Quinn said. “They’re the reigning champions for the NCPA. You always play up to your competition, so playing against people who are statistically better than you is going to make you better.”

The national title event will cap a five-tournament season for Quinn and the ‘Dogs. They placed third in their most recent contest.

The second-year club consists of seven members, and its season runs from October to mid-April.

The ‘Dogs will open the tournament today against UConn, Liberty University and the University of Tennessee. The event can be streamed live at paintballaccess.com.

Students who are interested in paintballing can receive more information by contacting club president Michael Boothby at 559-273-0253 or visiting the team’s Facebook page at facebook.com/FresnoStatePaintball.
