Briefs and blurbs on the Fresno State Bulldogs

Football: Mountain West announces Friday TV schedule

The Mountain West Conference released a slate of 11 Friday-night football games that will be telecast on the CBS Sports and ESPN networks, three of which will feature the Fresno State football team.

On Sept. 26, the Bulldogs will head to University Stadium in Albuquerque, N.M., where they will face the New Mexico Lobos on either ESPN or ESPN2.

The Bulldogs’ home game against San Diego State was moved to Oct. 3 and will be televised on the CBS Sports Network. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Oct. 17, Fresno State faces the Boise State Broncos at Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho, on ESPN.

Some other televised contests announced by the conference will be Washington State at Nevada (Sept. 5, ESPN or ESPN2), Northern Illinois at UNLV (Sept. 12, CBS Sports Network), BYU at Boise State (Oct. 24, ESPN or ESPN2) and Utah State at Wyoming (Nov. 7, ESPN2).

The Saturday televised games will be determined later.

Men’s Basketball: Anderson cleared to play

Fresno State sophomore forward Braeden Anderson was cleared to play Tuesday after suffering a season-ending car accident shortly before the 2013-14 men’s basketball season began.

“What an incredible moment,” Anderson posted on Instagram Wednesday afternoon. “7 months ago I broke my neck and only had a fraction of 1% chance of making a full recovery. Today at 2:49 pm I was officially fully cleared to resume full contact activities.”

On Sept. 3, Anderson was a passenger in one of four vehicles involved in a crash along Millerton Road. He suffered an injury to his cervical spine.

The 6-foot-9-inch Anderson from Alberta, Canada, played 10 games for the Bulldogs in 2012-13. He averaged 4.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and three assists in his freshman season.

Men’s Basketball: Freshman wins All-America honors

Fresno State freshman guard Paul Watson was selected to the Kyle Macy Freshman All-America team after a productive first year as a Bulldog.

Watson led all Mountain West freshmen with 4.6 rebounds per game (rpg) and was second in scoring (8.6 points per game (ppg)) and blocked shots (12). He was the third freshman in Fresno State history to be awarded the honor alongside Mike Mitchell (1985-86) and Greg Smith (2009-10).

Overall, Watson averaged 10 ppg and 4.4 rpg and shot 44.4 percent from the field. He started in all 39 games and played 29.1 minutes per game.

On Feb. 22, Watson scored a season-high 20 points in the ‘Dogs’ 79-76 win at Utah State.

Baseball: Borst named Mountain West Co-Pitcher of the Week

Fresno State sophomore pitcher Tim Borst was named the Mountain West baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week for games played from March 31 to April 6, sharing the honor with UNLV’s Bryan Bonnell.

Last Saturday, Borst pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing only five hits, in the ‘Dogs’ 2-0 victory over UNLV at Pete Beiden Field. He had four strikeouts and no walks in the contest.

All five hits allowed in that game were singles, and he did not allow any hits from the third till the seventh innings.

Bonnell also pitched a complete-game shutout the night after, when UNLV avenged its loss to the Bulldogs with a 7-0 beating. Just like Borst, Bonnell allowed five hits in the contest, struck out four, but walked one batter.

This season, Borst has a 2-1 record with a 2.83 ERA. He won the sole Pitcher of the Week honors for games played from Feb. 24 to March 2.
