Fresno State (3-0, 1-0 MWC), the sole Mountain West Conference team to remain undefeated, will play its first road game of the season against Hawaii Saturday night.

The Rainbow Warriors (0-3, 0-1 MWC), in their second year under head coach Norm Chow, face instability at quarterback. Incumbent starter Taylor Graham suffered an injury on his non-throwing shoulder and is questionable against the Bulldogs. Three other quarterbacks saw action in Hawaii’s recent loss to Nevada.

The Bulldogs departed for Hawaii on Thursday. Fresno State beat Hawaii 45-10 last season at Bulldog Stadium, a game in which most starters were subbed out by the second half.

Joey Ramirez, sports editor of Ka Leo, Hawaii’s student newspaper, said that the Rainbow Warriors’ offense has not been able to gain traction since Chow — who was successful as an offensive coordinator at USC — took the helm.

Here’s more of what Ramirez had to share with The Collegian:

THE COLLEGIAN: Hawaii’s first two games were against Pac-12 opponents, and now, a month after its season-opener against USC, the team returns home to Aloha Stadium. What are some things to take away from Hawaii’s first three games this season?

KA LEO: After three games, it is obvious that the Rainbow Warriors’ offense is a colossal mess. With just three touchdowns in as many games, Hawaii will need a complete turnaround if it is going to compete in any of its games this season.

While the ‘Bows have one of the nation’s worst turnover ratios (-2.3), the real problem is how many three and outs and short drives they have piled up. UH’s defense is solid, but you wouldn’t know it given the final scores of the first three games since the offense can’t manage to stay on the field. Unfortunately for Hawaii, injuries have also plagued the team early on and have left it with few players capable of taking over the game.

Coach Norm Chow enters his second year with Hawaii. What has his influence on the program been so far?

Norm Chow has had an interesting tenure with Hawaii thus far. Initially, his hiring was met with praise and high expectations throughout the state. But last season’s 3-9 campaign left fans frustrated, especially with the offense.

This year has seen his public approval drop even further as UH supporters have grown increasingly upset with the ineffectiveness of his offense and the fact that the ‘Bows aren’t just losing, but losing without really competing.

Obviously, there is some uncertainty at quarterback for the Rainbow Warriors. Three other quarterbacks played after Taylor Graham went down with an injury against Nevada. What have Coach Chow and the team said about how the team plans to progress in that position against Fresno State?

Junior quarterback Taylor Graham is UH’s clear No. 1 quarterback at the moment, but he is questionable at best to play in Saturday’s game. If Graham cannot go, last year’s starter Sean Schroeder or freshman Ikaika Woolsey will be given the reins for this week.

Schroeder struggled throughout 2012 and has limited arm strength along with a slow windup in his throwing motion. Woolsey is inexperienced but would at least be a fresh face with a lot more upside.

Who are some key players to look out for on the Rainbow Warriors defense?

Senior linebacker Art Laurel has led the Rainbow Warrior defense so far with 22 tackles, including five for loss. Fellow senior Brendan Daley is right behind him with 16 tackles and 4.5 for loss despite missing the majority of the Oregon State game due to a concussion.

Safety Marrell Jackson led the ‘Bows with 56 tackles as a freshman last season and has improved his coverage skills since.

What are some keys to the game for Hawaii?

In order to pull off this major upset, Hawaii will need to limit Fresno State’s offense to under 28 points, which will obviously be a difficult task. Plagued by injuries on both sides of the ball, UH is simply overmatched and will have to have plenty of luck and create some turnovers if it is to have a chance.

Freshman running back Diocemy Saint Juste, who was banged up against Nevada last week, needs to break out with at least 100 yards, or the offense won’t be able to keep up with the Bulldogs.
