The Fresno State softball team will wrap up its inaugural season in the Mountain West Conference with a three-game series against New Mexico this weekend.
It should be a memorable weekend for the Bulldogs.
Not only will they be honoring the team’s two seniors on Sunday, but Saturday is Bark in the Park Day.
Fresno State features just two seniors on the 2013 roster — Clovis’ Diange Runge and Tulare’s Mackenzie Mendonca.
Runge, who played her high school ball at Buchanan High School, leads the Bulldogs with a .315 batting average. She has started 49 games for the Bulldogs.
Mendonca played her high school ball at Tulare Western and played at the College of the Sequoias before transferring to Fresno State. She has appeared in 22 games for the Bulldogs this season.
The Bulldogs have owned the Lobos in the series’ history, which started in 1981. Fresno State has posted a 29-5 record against New Mexico.
The Bulldogs will look to keep those winning ways going if they hope to finish the conference season with an above .500
Fresno State comes in with a 27-22 overall record and is 8-7 overall.
New Mexico has struggled throughout the season. The Lobos are 21-29 overall and just 3-9 in Mountain West Conference play.
The Lobos’ top hitter is Mariah Rimmer.
She leads the team with a .333 batting average, and has six doubles, three home runs and a team-high 20 RBIs. She can be a menace on the bases with 25 steals.
Fresno State enters the series with the possibility of having four players finish the season with above .300 batting averages.
Runge is hitting .315, Paige Gumz is hitting .312, Vonnie Martin is at .308 and Brenna Moss is right there with a .299 batting average.
Stesha Brazil and Michelle Solomon are providing the pop in the lineup. Brazil has nine home runs and 24 RBIs, and Solomon has five home runs and a team-high 37 RBIs.
Fresno State’s mascots Timeout and Victor E. are inviting fans to bring their dogs to Saturday night’s game.
Dogs must remain on a leash and can sit out on the berm. The first 50 dogs at the Bulldog Diamond will get a bag filled with chew toys and treats.
Owners must sign a pet waiver at the dog entrance, which will be located on the gravel lot in the northeast corner of the stadium.
A contest will be held for best dressed dog at the game.
