Women’s Golf hosts Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic

The Fresno State women’s golf team will host 14 teams at the Copper River Country Club in the ninth annual Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic today and Tuesday.

The 54-hole, par-72, two-day tournament will feature Mountain West Conference opponents New Mexico, Colorado State, Wyoming and Nevada.

Also participating in the Lexus Golf Classic — the only tournament the Bulldogs will host this season — are Cal Poly, Idaho, Long Beach State, CSU Fullerton, Oregon State, Sacramento State, San Jose State, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and Tulsa.

“We always look forward to the Lexus Classic and hosting a great tournament,” Fresno State coach Angie Cates-Moore said. “It’s the one time a year that our family and friends can watch us compete here at home.”

Senior Day

The Fresno State lacrosse team fell to UC Davis, 15-6, in the team’s home finale at Bulldog Stadium on Saturday.

Kara Concheck, who leads the team with 23 points this season, scored four goals for the Bulldogs — three of which were scored in the first eight minutes of the second half.

Vanessa Swalwell scored the other goal for the Bulldogs off an assist from Anjelica Fuccilo. Senior Katie Wilbur recorded seven saves.

But it wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs, who trailed 10-1 at halftime.

Ten seniors — Wilbur, Swalwell, Paula Badali, Taylor Fiehler, Natalie Harrington, Lauren Natale, Sophie Walker, Sara Weber, Sarah Weeks and Margaret Wolford — were honored before Saturday’s match.

Saturday’s match was a rematch of the last year’s regular-season finale between the Aggies and the Bulldogs — one that saw Fresno State pull off a 12-11 upset in overtime on the road.

Fresno State dropped to 2-11 on the season and 0-4 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. The Bulldogs conclude the season with road games against MPSF opponents Saint Mary’s on Wednesday and USC on Saturday.

Former Bulldog Nick Watney finishes Masters tied for 13th

Nick Watney, nephew of Fresno State men’s golf coach Mike Watney and a former Bulldog standout, finished this year’s Masters Tournament tied for 13th place.

In his sixth consecutive appearance in the major golf tournament, Watney shot 78-69-68-72””287 and finished at 1 under. Watney hit even-par in the final round and made four birdies at the Augusta National on Sunday.

Women’s Tennis goes 0-2 in weekend road stand

Fresno State, which was riding a four-match win streak heading into its weekend road stretch, fell to San Diego State and UNLV in a pair of close 4-3 matches on Saturday and Sunday.

Fresno State (12-7, 5-2), which entered the weekend undefeated in Mountain West Conference play, grabbed the doubles point against the Aztecs. It wasn’t enough for the win, however, as the Aztecs came back to win the 4-of-6 in singles competition.

Aishwarya Agrawal (at the No. 2 singles spot) and Sophie Watts (No. 4) grabbed the two singles wins against the Aztecs.

Sunday’s match against UNLV was a similar story for the Bulldogs.

Against the Rebels, Fresno State improved in singles play — Watts, Melissa McQueen and Bianca Modoc won their matches — but lost the critical doubles point.

Two of the three doubles matches on Sunday were decided by tiebreakers.

“Today, we played better in singles,” Fresno State coach Ryan Stotland said after Sunday’s loss. “But in doubles, we came out just going through the motions. We played a tough UNLV team that we had already beaten once, but they played a little better at home.”

Watts, who won her Sunday singles match against Nives Pavlovic in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 6-1), extended her win streak to 10 matches.

Fresno State, ranked No. 55 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, concludes the regular season this weekend with road matchups against Boise State on Saturday and New Mexico on Sunday before competing in the April 25-28 Mountain West Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo.

San Diego State entered the weekend 48th in ITA team rankings.

Men’s Golf places 11th out of 14 at Western Intercollegiate

The Fresno State men’s golf team finished the weekend 68-over par and in a two-way tie for 11th place at the Western Intercollegiate.

The Bulldogs posted 37 birdies and five eagles in the 14-team tournament, and concluded the first day in ninth place.

Rufie Fessler led the Bulldogs at 13-over par and tied for 44th place.

Cal won the tournament at one-over par.
