Matchup: Cal State Northridge (1-4) at Fresno State (4-1) today at 3 and 5 p.m. at Bulldog Diamond

The lowdown

The Fresno State softball team coming off a 4-1 performance last weekend as the host of the Fresno State Kick-Off Tournament.

Fresno State continues nonconference play today against Cal State Northridge in a doubleheader. The Bulldogs will also compete in the UC Santa Barbara Tournament this weekend.

Cal State Northridge enters the matchup at 1-4, having lost to San Jose State, Florida and Cal in the KajiKawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

The Matadors’ sole win in the young season was a 6-1 victory over Western Michigan on Sunday.

Young team shows grit in circle

One of the biggest question marks leading up to the start of the season was who would be stepping up in the circle.

Fresno State lost two key seniors in Michelle Moses and Mackenzie Oakes — who were the Bulldogs’ one-two punch pitcher combination.

It’s still early in the season for a clear-cut answer, but the Fresno State kickoff offered a glimpse. Freshman Jillian Compton went 3-1 in the circle, pitching 28 of 34 innings. She allowed 24 hits, though finished the tournament with a 1.75 ERA.

Did you see…

… Junior Vonnie Martin’s grand slam off UTEP pitcher Laura Ramos’ pitch in the first inning of the Bulldogs’ first game of the season under first-year coach Trisha Ford.

The Bulldogs won their opening game 10-2 against UTEP. The game ended, mercifully, in five innings.

Talk about a debut.
