Diamond ‘Dogs clean house at WAC postseason banquet

Fresno State baseball’s sixth consecutive Western Athletic Conference regular-season championship was capped off by a trio of top honors on Tuesday night.

Junior slugger Dusty Robinson was named WAC Player of the Year, while his teammates Greg Gonzalez grabbed Pitcher of the Year and freshman Aaron Judge selected as Freshman of the Year. To top it off, seven of the 16 first team All-WAC slots were Fresno State Bulldogs.

Robinson led the conference in home runs with 14, six more than the runner up. He also had the most doubles (19), total bases (123) and the top slugging percentage (.658) in the WAC. Robinson is just the latest in a long line of Player of the Year honorees from Fresno State, becoming the fourth straight Bulldog to head into the conference tournament with the honor.

Gonzalez grabbed Pitcher of the Year honors for his unblemished 10-0 record and a conference-leading earned run average of 1.44. Gonzalez led every major statistical category in the WAC for a starting ace, including strike outs (118) and opposing batting average (.182).

The towering 6-foot-7 Judge earned his Freshman of the Year honor after having an outstanding inagural season at the plate. Judge led all Bulldogs in batting average with .351, including .414 in WAC play and was selected as first team all-conference. Danny Muno was the last Bulldog to win the honor back in 2008.

Those achievements are great! I always like to see who wins the WAC, and Frenso State definitely deserved it this year.

    Congratulations!
