Student protesters misguided
The students who were making their “demandsâ€Â of Welty were a perfect example of misguided anger. Some asked why the security? Was it to protect Welty? No it wasn’t. It was to protect students who disagreed with the protesters. Any time a student got up and spoke something that these kids disagreed with, they got heckled, booed and cursed at. The organizers of this event live in a fantasy world. Education will never be free and should not be free. You have to work hard if you want to go to school, and if you can’t afford it, there is plenty of state and federal aid to help. These students who are fed up have some valid concerns but it seems they have hijacked this issue to suit their own left-wing political ideology rather than the interests of the students as a whole. It was obvious when the girl got up and said “Cuba is accepting American medical students.â€Â There was no reason to say that other than to satisfy ideology. The students who organized this event should recognize the real problem instead of trying to injects some political ideology into it.

Welty deserves respect
I was shocked to read how so many students disrespected President Welty and asked him about his salary and about his house. I want to ask all those students what steps they are taking to save the economy. These are the same students who spend $100 to buy costumes during Halloween. 55 percent of Fresno State students have iPhones, which cost over $100 a month. I have traveled to 8 countries and have seen students who cannot go to college, have to wait two to three years to enter college, and cannot get financial aid. These students get financial aid and are always pointing fingers at other people̢۪s success. I am not against any student, but I feel sorry for them for acting immature. All I can tell them is to work hard and not point fingers or disrespect someone who is working hard and doing his job.

I am someone who doesn’t have an i phone, who is a full time student with a part time job and i think it is ridiculous that Wilty, espeacially when the economy is down is getting a raise. WHY? Why can’t that money go to places were it is better spent. I do work hard for this highier education but i also feel that they are making it more difficult for students to obtain it. Those who claims that kids who are complaining just wants the easy way out to a highier edcation are IGNORANT and have no knowlwgde of what others go through. We aren’t other NATIONS! This America and don’t anyone forget that. And about the iPhone, why isn’t this issue put out to public. See people are good at talking about other people but rarely say it in person. There should be a big poster that says, IF YOU CAN AFFORD AN iPHONE, YOU CAN AFFORD THE FEE INCREASE! But i haven’t seen it. ALL i do is tell it to people…which i guess is better than nothing.

I was not that person no.
I was just observing what was going on and it was one of the most counter-productive events I’ve seen in a while. I was not responsible for what that person said, nor do I know that person personally. But from what I heard there were threats to him….

I don’t see how a person’s weight has anything to do with student fees and such. When you make personal attacks it appears to other readers that you don’t have anything of substance to talk about. I’m just saying…

I’m sorry Garth, I should’ve said “your postings on this website.” And, were you the guy standing on the knoll yelling at the town hall?

What do I “spew?”
Is it not true that these protesters concerns are valid, but their anger is misguided? Is it not true that their invoking Cuba, US Berkley, “Social Justice”, Tax Increases, “Shared Sacrifice”, burning down the university, and the like does nothing but satisfy ideology, especially when they are going to the guy who has the least amount of power to do anything. Come on guys. We all want solutions to the problems, but its unrealistic to believe that we will be guaranteed a free college education. It just doesn’t work that way.

kaj2003, it’s a legitimate question and comment. Were you at the town hall? I was. I saw and heard a rather obese gentleman (and I use the term loosely since the campus cops made a point of separating that person from the meeting) yelling the same stuff Garth spews in his letter.

A Real Alumnus, there is no need to use personal attacks in your comments if you don’t agree with Garth. Personal attacks undermine your argument. Stick to the facts.

I agree, students should work hard, not complain, and also get a job.
OH WAIT!!! have you not heard the recent state of this country? There are lack of jobs, there is very little financial aid, and the government has invested all of its money (well most) into corporations who have robbed the American public of thier resources. Not to mention that there is no interest to fund public eduction because it is used to pay soldiers to kill and disrespect the nations of other countires.
So i agree students should get jobs and work hard…if the country provided such a means to do so.
