Bulldog football midterm grades

Logan: It has been a roller coaster year for Bulldog fans and it’s only halfway done. After a frustrating 1-3 start for the ’Dogs, the team has bounced back to even its record after six games. Personally, I feel like the coaching staff deserves the majority of the credit for saving the team from spiraling out of control.

Jimmy: The Bulldogs’ ability to overcome adversity and bounce back is really a credit to Pat Hill and his coaching staff.

Despite three consecutive losses to teams now ranked in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) rankings, Fresno State has recovered nicely to put up 40 points in its last two games.

Fresno State’s season could have taken a serious turn toward 2006 (aka the seven-game losing streak), but finishing with only one loss in conference play is looking like a real possibility.

Logan: The September schedule was definitely stacked and it would have been nearly impossible to escape without a loss to Wisconsin, Boise State and Cincinnati. But after surviving that tumultuous start, the remaining six games on the schedule do look more than winnable.

It’s fair to say that the Bulldogs should be favored in all of those games. The talent is there. The Bulldogs just need to remain focused on the task at hand and have the right game plan in place.

Jimmy: A problem for Fresno State in the past has been keeping that focus all the way through its conference schedule.

It seems that every season there is one inexplicable loss to an inferior team.

It may be a little too early to feel good about this, but Hill’s philosophy of just being “1-0” every week may be just the motivation the team needs heading into the remaining WAC schedule.

Logan: That simple philosophy may seem old and tired at this point, but it’s real.

If the Bulldogs do end up with a 1-0 record every week for the remaining six games on schedule, the three losses to those teams ranked in the BCS may not seem so painful anymore – 9-3 would be better than most fans expected from this team.

Jimmy: And for a group of first-year coordinators and position coaches, it would be utterly amazing.

The key for Hill and his staff will be for them to continuously remind their players not to play down to their competition and remind the WAC what Bulldog football is all about.

Those grades might be based on 2006 standards, so obviously they’re going to be respectable. I, for one, still have high hopes for the team.

Not even close to be correct on your grading. Pretty much totally laughable. 3-3 team and the head coach gets a B? Garbage. I guess if you keep expectations in the gutter, being .500 midway through the season deserves a B. For those of us who reside on plant Earth…….
