2009 ASI election results announced

Next year̢۪s Associated Students Inc. (ASI) senate will be voting on whether or not senators should receive stipends, as the referendum establishing the consideration of senator stipends passed, 704-365.

Passing of the referendum does not create any new fees, but rather suggests to the senate to take a vote regarding senator stipends. The current ASI senate put forth the referendum on this year̢۪s ballot because they recognize that student senator positions do demand considerable time and effort to complete effectively their assigned duties and responsibilities. ASI also views a stipend as a way to encourage students to participate in the organization.

“I think it’s great that students considered that senators should be compensated for their hard work,â€Â said Lauren Johnson, newly re-elected Vice President of Finance (VPF).

Jessica Sweeten, who was elected to the position of ASI president agrees, but urges the senate and her fellow ASI executives to be cautious when making their decision about the referendum next year.

“It’s great to be able to even consider senate stipends as an option, and other universities are paying their senators, but then again those other schools have much larger budgets than we do,â€Â Sweeten said. “When we vote we will have to be mindful of our budget, which is much smaller, and be thinking about how we are going to hold senators more accountable.â€Â

For this year̢۪s ASI election, voter turnout was about the same as last year̢۪s election. 1,303 students total voted this year compared to 1,371 students last year.

Current Executive Vice President Jessica Sweeten was elected to the position of ASI president, with 574 votes.

Johnson was re-elected to the position of Vice President of Finance, with 611 votes, the highest number of votes for any candidate in any of the races.

Brie Witt, Debbie Munroe, Cesar Sanchez and Mathew Todd, who all ran unopposed, were elected to their senate positions. Witt will be the new senator for the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology.

Munroe is the new senator for the Kremen School of Education. Sanchez is the senator for the Craig School of Business. Todd is the senator for the Lyles College of Engineering.

Nine students were elected to the senator at-large position. They include Alex Andreotti, Clifton Wahlberg, Cody Madsen, Siena Farensi, Melissa Mata, Maddie Shannon, Eduardo Rodriguez, Julianne Phillips and Peter Cassaca.

PEDROJOKE–you are a JOKE alright. Jumping to conclusions, stupid conclusions. I’m never surprised by the stupidity that flows out of ASI and those connected to it. In plain English (if you can understand it): I’m not a student. Figure it out.

dw, you have been using this to push your anti-ASI propaganda because you have a grudge with ASI, if it is so bad, you run.

Josh, “perhaps a few facts are off” get your story straight before you talk about corruption.

So the establishment of ASI was so worried about the revolution that they fabricated photos? Worried about what? Four at-large senators? Come on, no one was seriously scared of a lot of people voting for crazies. Look at the results.

You have no evidence of being set-up and the fact that anyone who had significant competition still loss is evidence that you all are being a bit pretentious.

antagonistic? You all are heros now? Fighting against the oppression of following the rules and running a clean campaign? Fight the good fight!

You complain about twisting words, you are twisting the truth! Who’s desperate?

Garbage like this serves only to solidify the notion: “let’s abolish this group.”

The campus conservatives tried to do just that in the mid-1990s, on the heels of the Republican “Revolution in Congress” and the “Contract for America.” They got a slate of candidates elected using the slogan that ASI was corrupt (which it was) and out of control (by doubling the ASI fee to $16 a semester). They cut the fee in half; nearly destroyed the Campus Childrens’ Center; and dismantled Recreation-Intramurals. Their professed aim was that the university should be providing these services and thus ASI should be dissolved.

Finally, the conservatives thought they could shut ASI down by resigning en mass. That way the Senate could not conduct business and could not put a budget together. Dr. Welty stepped in and the administration drafted a budget for the following academic year. The first item of business for the new Senate, after in was sworn in that July, was to approve the Welty prepared ASI budget.

ASI essentially has been a plague upon this campus–witness the war between ASI and the Collegian, which ended with the Collegian becoming part of MCJ again, before the fee was passed.

Perhaps, the best solution is to dissolve ASI, and split the fee up among the entities it now funds.

Perhaps a few of my facts are a bit off. But the facts still remain that ASI has a history of corruption and that this is another case of said corruption.
Maybe his name isn’t Cole, whoever took the pictures, and I never said they were photoshopped, I said they were fabricated meaning that the signs were replaced by the photographer and the flier very easily could have been placed on the ground within 100 feet by the photographer as well. And yes, when the gringo who set you up yells “Si se puede” while you are protesting being set up, it is racist and antagonistic. So maybe surveillence is a better word than spying, they still had no reason to be there other than an attempt to intimidate a group who will not be intimidated.
I’m through arguing with a coward who won’t even post their name. Hopefully the rest of the students will see through all the BS that has been piled around this. Twist my words, that’s what desperate people do.

Josh, so misguided. First, you and PEDRO keep getting it wrong. Ask Tom, Mason didn’t use ASI funds to provide alcohol for minors, your merging seperate incidents as one. Either way it gas nothing to do with this election other than the dfact that you all based your entire campaign on it.
And who is Cole and how is Si Se Puede racist? And what does that have to do with PEDRO breaking the rules.
See, PEDRO is talking about all of this racism and conspiracy but your defense is that pictures were photoshopped? Come on you have to have something better than that!
And someone was spying on you? What did you have to hide and isn’t that contradictory of the claims to be transperant?
And the elitist comments? Who? The top two candidates got trounced, was it because the elites hid the computers and blocked off the polling booths, right after they faked the moon landing?
We know that’s not true because PEDRO was too close to the booths and making sure people don’t use they’re computers to express free will and vote for someone else.

FYI: if you’ll remember last spring’s IRA referendum, a referendum doesn’t actually mean anything at all. ASI usually doesn’t listen to the student’s voices in making their recommendation to Welty and Welty gets the final say anyway. It’s basically just something they do so that if the students vote according to ASI and Welty’s wishes then they look good, if the students don’t vote that way then they just get ignored. We really shouldn’t call them “representatives” we should be honest and just call them politicians.

I’m referring to Walter’s campaign signs being torn up and defaced with racial slurs. I’m not pulling the race card (by the way, I’m white), I’m just referring to what I’ve seen. And Cole mockingly yelling out “Si Se Puede!” as he and friends sat at a distance is racist. They were there only to spy on us and try to intimidate us.
Like I explained in my last post, most of these alleged rule violations were not actual violations, Judge Martin should be especially ashamed of himself for not actually investigation any of the allegations and only taking the word and fabricated pictures of people who obviously had a conflict of interest.
This is why we need new blood in ASI. I’m sure there are some decent people on the Senate, but what we have here is a case of an elitist group trying to protect their positions and interests. Mackee Mason using ASI funds to buy alcohol for minors was not an isolated incident, it was just one of the few times underhanded actions done by ASI representatives was caught.

Walter ran a solid campaign and lost, maybe you all shouldnt be hanging around losers. Why would you have a campaign contributor who doesnt know how to win a campaign?
Everything is a conspiracy, YOU BROKE THE RULES! Multiple times, Hector and Tom are the first to talk about scandals and being corrupt, but you all blatantly broke the rules, repeatably. How can you expect to govern if you dont know the rules?? Racism, get out of here.

They were “caught” campaigning 133 ft from the polling place, that’s over 100 ft which makes it legal. The other “offenses” were witnessed by other candidates which is a conflict of interest. As far as the computer rumor, the rule was made the night before and said “offender” was not sent that e-mail and hadn’t gotten the message yet, she did not pull away the cojmputer from a person voting for the “wrong people”. The infraction for the signs was bogus, Tom had taken down the signs, then the next day they were back up and opposing candidates just happened to be there with a camera, coincidence? I think not.
Yes, 3 of PEDROs 10 candidates weren’t voted in, but what about the other 7?
and why hasn’t the collegian pulled all these posts from people using pseudo-names?
“Comments that are…posted under a false name may be removed at the discretion of The Collegian.” you are probably some of the same candidates who set them up.
And let’s not forget the racial comments being made by said candidates outside the protest in front of Joyal building.
We saw this same kind of racism when Walter ran for prez last spring. If this stuff doesn’t sound corrupt and fishy it’s either out of ignorance or co-conspiracy.
